چکیده

The role of prophylactic antibiotics in children with ANH who are awaiting completion of postnatal investigations is controversial. Children with ANH have been shown to have a significantly higher risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI) than controls. While it is believed that prophylactic antibiotics will prevent urinary tract infections in children with VUR, it has yet to be proven. Therefore, some recommend institution of prophylactic antibiotics at birth; others instead recommend a low threshold for investigation and treatment of a suspected UTI. Commonly used prophylaxes in the neonate include amoxicillin 50 mg per day and cephalexin6 50 mg per day. Trimethoprim-sulfamatholxazole and nitrofurantoin should NOT be used in the neonate.

Voiding cystourethrogram in the diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux in children with antenatally diagnosed hydronephrosis

UNLABELLED Prenatal ultrasonography has revolutionized the detection and management of many urological abnormalities. Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) which develops in 10% to 15% of cases of prenatal hydronephrosis, is difficult to predict prenatally. While all children with prenatal hydronephrosis should undergo ultrasonography within the first few weeks of life, there seems to be controversy rega...

Renal scintigraphy in infants with antenatally diagnosed renal pelvis dilatation.

BACKGROUND/AIM Ureteropelvic junction obstruction and vesicoureteral reflux are the most frequent entities identified on the basis of antenatal hydronephrosis. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and pattern of abnormal renal scintigraphy findings in postnatal investigation of children with antenatal hydronephrosis. METHODS Twenty-four infants (19 boys and five girls) present...

Primary vesicoureteric reflux--how useful is postnatal ultrasound?

The presence or absence of pelvicalyceal dilatation on postnatal ultrasound continues to appear within diagnostic algorithms to select patients for micturating cystourethrography (MCU) in the investigation of antenatally diagnosed hydronephrosis. Postnatal ultrasound findings were assessed in a population diagnosed as having antenatal hydronephrosis due solely to primary vesicoureteric reflux (...

Simplified diagnostic algorithm for evaluation of neonates with prenatally detected hydronephrosis.

INTRODUCTION The management of neonates with congenital hydronephrosis (CHN) diagnosed antenatally is still controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective study was performed in all newborn infants with CHN born over a 2-year period in order to identify which neonates require a full radiologic investigation including investigation with invasive tests such as voiding cystoureterography (VC...
